Drop in. Free. Children ages 4-10 are invited to play learning games and practice reading with Teen Buddy Volunteers. Children meet with Teen Buddies with support from one of our children's librarians, Jess. Teen Buddies lead games that focus on literacy, math and strategy to help kids have fun while they sharpen classroom and social skills. Teen Buddies may also assist with reading practice by listening to children read aloud then chat with them to practice comprehension.
Teen Buddies assist but are not trained to teach reading or select books. If reading practice is the goal parents should send their child with books geared to their reading ability and frustration tolerance or help them pick out an appropriate book at the library. We will have a bookcart full of early readers to choose from as well.
Join us in the Storytime room most Tuesdays, except late May and early August. We don't meet during Mason School breaks as well.
We cancel children’s events whenever Mason City Schools close due to Severe Weather. Delays do not count as closings.
Parents are expected to remain in the library during Learning Buddies.
